Activity 32 Developing Self-control
Purpose: To understand the use of behaviorism in counseling and psychotherapy.
Objectives: Make a program for behavior change.
Student preparation: How could you use principles from social learning theory to help you to gain greater self-control?
Procedure:
- Observe one behavior such as overeating or participation in exercise.
- Monitor the behavior and where it is likely to occur. Count chart and evaluate each instance of the behavior.
- Make a list of graduated objectives.
- Develop a systematic schedule of reinforcers.
- Identify situations or things in the environment that may increase of decrease this behavior.
- Think about a plan to help change the chosen behavior.
- What reinforcers could you use?
- How can changing the environment help?
- What about waiting 15 minutes before engaging in automatic behaviors?
- What about making an undesired activity less enjoyable and a desired activity more enjoyable?
