Activity 32 Developing Self-control

Purpose:  To understand the use of behaviorism in counseling and psychotherapy.

 

Objectives: Make a program for behavior change.

 

 

Student preparation: How could you use principles from social learning theory to help you to gain greater self-control?

Procedure:

  1. Observe one behavior such as overeating or participation in exercise.
  2. Monitor the behavior and where it is likely to occur. Count chart and evaluate each instance of the behavior.
  3. Make a list of graduated objectives.
  4. Develop a systematic schedule of reinforcers.
  5. Identify situations or things in the environment that may increase of decrease this behavior.
  6. Think about a plan to help change the chosen behavior.
  7. What reinforcers could you use?
  8. How can changing the environment help?
  9. What about waiting 15 minutes before engaging in automatic behaviors?
  10. What about making an undesired activity less enjoyable and a desired activity more enjoyable?
